Key West Aids Memorial is a way of remembering the multitude of people who were lost to AIDS. A tribute that leaves a lasting impression, the memorial has more than 1000 names listed on it. The Key West AIDS Memorial has been built with private funds and was inaugurated on December 1, 1997. Initially, there were 730 names on the memorial. The number has increased over the years and the memorial can accommodate 1500 names. The names are engraved once a year, on the World AIDS day, December 1. A group called Friends of the AIDS memorial was formed in 1998 that protects, preserves and maintains the site.
