Neighborhoods

Key West city has an area of 19.2 km2 and is primarily divided into two main areas: The Old Town and the New Town. Old town is the western part of the Island where the original Key West Settlement is located. Some of the major tourist attractions like the Mallory Square, Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor are found in the Old Town. The Duval street, known for a line of shops that sell almost anything, is also present here.

For those who avail travel deals in Key West, the accommodation in the Old Town is easy. The classic bungalows and guest mansions dating back to late 19th century are found here. The architecture includes heavy wood work with one or two story constructions set on three feet foundation piers. The roads are narrow and the traffic moves slowly. Within Old Town, there are sub-areas: Solares Hill and the Bahama Village. Solares Hill is the highest natural area in the city while Bahama Village is a cultural settlement located west of Whiteland Street.

The land area of the island has been double since 1940 by landfill. Most of this new land is on the eastern sider of the Island and is known as the New Town. The area hosts a number of shopping centers, schools, residential areas and the Key West International Airport. The architecture is typical Florida style. A few tourist destinations in the area include Smather’s Beach and East Martello Museum.

Key West Florida travel brings one to the beautiful island with a rich cultural history and distinctive tourist interest. Apart from the two main parts of the island, the third prominent neighborhood in the area is the Stock Island, which is a small island nearby. It got it’s name from the practice of keeping livestock on the island in the earlier days. The attractions with tourist consequence on this small island are: Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center, Public Golf Course and the Hogfish Bar and restaurant.
